• Make sure the brick rake is set up to the depth you require before you begin.
• Make sure the spade bolt is securely tightened so you do not lose the robust pin!
• Hold the brick rake handle parallel to the ‘beds’ (horizontals) of mortar.
• As you begin to move the tool, apply downward pressure to scrape away at the mortar. Try to keep a steady even pressure on the tool as you work.
• Move the tool along the ‘beds’ and down the ‘perps’.
• Move the tool from side to side as you go, scraping mortar evenly.
• You should work on the higher areas first and then work down the wall when removing mortar. This way, once you have worked on an area it will remain clean.
• Make sure your pin is in the mortar and not on the bricks – an obvious but easy mistake to make!
